Hi,

Some of you may know that the latest ubuntu version (karmic koala) has a new feature called upstart. I haven't tried it but is seems that it would take less then 20 or 30 seconds to boot to the desktop. My question is if toorox has something similar ?

Sorry, it looks like it is Ubuntu (Debian) only till now.
How long does it take starting your installed Toorox till a complete KDE startup?
In my case - 30 Sek

You can set rc_parallel="YES" in /etc/rc.conf and check out if this will give you a speed improvement.

it's 50 seconds. I tried as root (su) vi to edit rc.conf but it's not installed. Tried edit, Kwrite, kate ... but no access.

I tried this but saw no difference. If yours is 20 sec then that's superfast ! My laptop has a dual core P8600 2,4 Ghz and 4Gb mem, so should be fast but it's not.

30 Sec for me from Kernel to KDE fully loaded. Probably your hard disk is not the fastest?

I'll check my HD; do you know a good test software ?

You can install hdparm and test it with:
hdparm -Tt /dev/(h)sda
I've found this for you:

Ok, here's the result:
Cached 1102 MBs, buffered 36 MBs
65 seeks/s, 15,26 ms

Don't know what HD I have, but it's not a very fast one

Strange, but I have different results depending on the partition. Toorox is on /dev/sda3, Windows on /dev/sda1:

Toorox64 ~ # hdparm -Tt /dev/sda3

/dev/sda3:
Timing cached reads: 3474 MB in 2.00 seconds = 1738.40 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 120 MB in 3.06 seconds = 39.27 MB/sec
Toorox64 ~ # hdparm -Tt /dev/sda

/dev/sda:
Timing cached reads: 3448 MB in 2.00 seconds = 1725.72 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 178 MB in 3.01 seconds = 59.09 MB/sec
Toorox64 ~ # hdparm -Tt /dev/sda

/dev/sda:
Timing cached reads: 3408 MB in 2.00 seconds = 1705.71 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 192 MB in 3.02 seconds = 63.56 MB/sec
Toorox64 ~ # hdparm -Tt /dev/sda3

/dev/sda3:
Timing cached reads: 3380 MB in 2.00 seconds = 1691.68 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 120 MB in 3.05 seconds = 39.38 MB/sec
Toorox64 ~ # hdparm -Tt /dev/sda3

/dev/sda3:
Timing cached reads: 3418 MB in 2.00 seconds = 1710.56 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 120 MB in 3.06 seconds = 39.27 MB/sec

/dev/sda1:
Timing cached reads: 2750 MB in 2.00 seconds = 1375.56 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 192 MB in 3.03 seconds = 63.44 MB/sec

Strange, but I have different results depending on the partition. Toorox is on /dev/sda3, Windows on /dev/sda1:
/dev/sda1 is stored on the outer tracks and /dev/sda3 is stored more to the inner tracks of your hard disk platter. The platter rotates at a constant speed - so the outer area of the platter is moving faster than the inner area, and there are more sectors stored on the outer tracks.
